Trevor day 1

From statics…
…to Dynamics

Dynamics
Prior to even discussing technique Trevor’s skiing was filmed so as to provide a reference. This skiing proved to be the classic outcome from standard ski instruction – to the letter! I don’t think I could demonstrate it better! Needless to say it robs you of all confidence. Suffice to say this is technique based squarely upon instructions derived from the mechanics of “Statics” – the wrong branch of physics. Consequently we went straight into dynamics – but not with the usual skating exercises and this proved to be the right choice for Trevor who managed the instructions impeccably. Here is a link to a fixed “Dynamics” page where the subject is explained.

It was clear immediately that Trevor found both ease and freedom of movement with the dynamics.

Foot Forward Technique
Due to having to navigate a steep section of the mountain I prepared Trevor with Foot Forward technique. Pushing the foot through the arc from behind the body to below – in front of the body – is how to activate a tighter turn – especially when using dynamics. It’s often referred to as “working the ski”. Steeper terrain also requires greater dynamics – which is complimented with the Foot Forward action. I was impressed that Trevor successfully used this with his first attempts already on a steep slope and no opportunity to practice it in advance.

Overall – we took our time today and I was careful to assure that each aspect of change was properly understood with full explanations – as understanding is really the key to all of this.
