This morning there were cold strong winds on the Val d’Isère glacier – which meant we only had two runs there before needing to go indoors to warm up – then due to everyone heading there for the best snow it became overcrowded. We skied our way back to the Bellevarde sector practicing carving most of the time. We had attempted to work on bumps down the side of the Solaise but they were icy and not the best conditions for learning so we returned to carving and building experience.
Today we we returned to the subject of upper body activity – but this time specifically applied to carving. The goal this time was to allow a deeper angulation and tighter carve.
- Hip Angulation (drawing the outside hip in the turn backward – counter to the direction of turning)
- Simultaneously twisting the rib cage into the direction of the turn
In addition the supporting leg aims to pressure the outside of the foot while its adductor muscles pull inwards toward the turn centre – so from the feet to the neck there are body parts to coordinate that all seem to be opposing each other. Derin is doing an excellent job of making it all work.
