Isabel demonstrates perfectly a “compression turn” in preparation for attacking some steep BIG bumps later on. I never explained all the detail of the exercise so Isabel was clearly managing to accurately copy from watching.
- Feet together
- Skis on uphill edges ready to pivot
- Pole planted downhill behind feet
- Legs flexed to almost 90° (simulating compression by a bump)
- Pole weighted by movement of Centre of Mass downhill into the turn
- Anticipating the turn
- Skis pivot (swing laterally) into the turn
- Extending legs fully to complete the turn (simulating filling the hole beneath the bump)
Bea impressively didn’t fall once this week despite progressing from blue runs only to big “black” bump fields. Somehow she managed all of that while leaning on the backs of her boots the whole time – something that definitely needs to be addressed for when she gets bigger and heavier.
Eva was keenest to ski the bumps even though they were bigger than her.
Bumps aren’t Greta’s strong point – for Greta the “flying kilometre” would suit perfectly!
