Derin 2023 day 5

Great snow conditions on the pistes today so we took full advantage of this.

Alignment
Indoors at the top of the Tovière Derin’s boot alignment was checked. I’d been wondering if there was an alignment issue generating a little too much of an A-frame stance. Sure enough the boots were under-edged but not by a great deal. This alignment issue can cause the knees to drop into the turns while searching for edge grip and that can put the knees at risk.

Fortunately the Salomon boots had adjustment at both sides of the boot cuff – and I had the right size alan key to adjust it. The cuffs were tilted outward to the maximum and this flattened the boot soles for Derin. The cuff adjustment is there to adapt the boots to your morphology – to get the boot sole perpendicular to the bone structure of a straight leg.

Derin reported an earlier edge in turning and more grip – no negative effects. Her A-frame stance also appeared to be reduced to a normal, appropriate level. Some people don’t value the A-frame in a stance but it certainly doesn’t stop world cup racers from using it frequently.

And now for the world number one skier Mikaela Shiffrin…
